Cross Pairs

Cross PairsThe currency pairs that do not involve the US dollar are called cross currency pairs, such as GBP/JPY. Pairs that involve the euro are often called euro crosses, such as EUR/GBP.

Other currency pairs which do not have the USD are referred to as cross-currency pairs or just the “crosses.” Crosses that involve the “major currencies are known as “minors.” The most widely traded crosses are taken from the EUR, JPY and GBP.

An individual who wished to exchange a sum of money into a different currency would be required to first convert that money into U.S dollars, and then convert it into the desired currency; cross currencies help individuals and traders bypass this step. The GBP/JPY cross, for example, was invented to help individuals in England and Japan who wanted to convert their money directly without having to first convert it into U.S dollars.
